It is still being worked on constantly, but the site is ready to go live officially.  After retooling it, we are going to rely on a news based push of FreeRunner and Openmoko based articles for the bulk of this site.  As an added bonus, we are trying to get a community of users together in the forums to form a LinuxQuestions.org type of site to really get some help to new users who may not understand the fundementals of mobile Linux, Openmoko and other operating systems that will run on open handsets.

Right now we are working to merge the registration of forum users and main site users, however in the meantime you can feel free to sign up in the forums and eventually you will be able to add comments and participate in the main part of the site.  Without any further adieu, welcome!

Non-Openmoko Backed Software Begins To Appear PDF Print E-mail

Slashdot picked up a solid story yesterday detailing what appears to be the first commercially backed program for the FreeRunner/Openmoko platform.  Devicescape's Wifi Sign-On Client will be ported by Holden Karau who, according to his blog, seems stoked to be behind the wheel of the project.  It appears that it is the answer to many of our prayers as it should be able to pick up free hotspots, wake-up and work on needed tasks (think email downloads, updates etc...anything that can be scheduled) as free wifi is available.  It also enables quick and easy access across all your software on an on demand sort of basis.  Our hats off to Holden and Devicescape for such a cool idea.

Feel free to discuss this story and others in the forums.

om2008.8 Takes On Debian Model PDF Print E-mail

According to the official OpenMoko.org wiki, it appears that the path to mainstream user adoption is opening up:

Posterior to the Om2008.8 release, in August 2008 development is switching to a Debian-like model with three branches: stable, testing and unstable. To minimize chaos, breakage and confusion, official updates for 2008.8 will be made available only when the move is complete...[read more]

Based on our understanding, this should really help with the legitimacy of the project in the mainstream user's eyes.  By virtue of a stable branch, we are guaranteed a good platform with each release that no longer relies on a rating system for daily builds.  It should be noted that the testing branch, currently in a temporary home, fixes a lot of annoying issues in the, now considered stable, branch.  We have ran it for 2 days without any major breakage--it seems to serve as a fairly decent holdover until the stable branch comes to fruition.

Feel free to discuss this story and others in the forums.

This has been mentioned in the forums, but I think it deserves a up-front explanation.  This site was originally opened because I was displeased with the status of the Openmoko.org wiki.  It was disorganized, too technical for novices (or intermediate users for that matter) and relied too much on prior knowledge of the project in order to understand what was being discussed.  This, of course, is not even mentioning the sheer lack of articles for many important things.

So after making a separate wiki, and seeing some decent traffic something awesome happened.  I noticed that the Openmoko.org wiki had caught up to a point that it was a detriment to the community to have two wikis that were competing.   I decided (after some prodding from the #openmoko freenode group) to focus this on news and community that is unavailable in a real way from Openmoko.org.

The next step is to get everything merged and really start contributing articles.  If anyone has an interest in helping out, pipe up!  We have access to quite a bit of bandwidth and a robust RHEL server.  So let's grow and put it to the test!
